AIEdu was a one-year European research project funded by the Civic Innovation Fund and implemented by the National Centre for Scientific Research ‘Demokritos’ (NCSR-D) in collaboration with the European Wergeland Center (EWC).
Artificial intelligence is all around us. It has the ability to provide personalized support that may greatly benefit students and teachers living in remote areas or living with disabilities. At the same time, it is important that the implementation of AI in schools aligns with human rights and respects the dignity of the learners. How can teachers achieve AI literacy to understand how AI works and use it effectively as a tool? What sort of ethical concerns does the use of AI represent? What is the role of critical thinking when it comes to daily use of AI?
In 2024 , The European Wergeland Centre and The National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos” (NCSR Demokritos) invited young teachers and educators to join the Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIEdu) project: a 1-year aiming to encourage development of new approaches and teaching practices in education, by focusing on the impact of AI.
The AIEdu project was addressed to educators of formal and non-formal education and aimed to encourage the development of new approaches and teaching practices in the field of citizenship education – by focusing on the impact of AI in society. The project activities was designed based on the Digital Citizenship Education model developed by the Council of Europe, as well as the Council of Europe’s “Reference Framework of Competences for Democratic Culture,” to support educators be more aware of responsible and respectful ways to use AI as part of their work.
The AIEdu project had a research component and an awareness component . Its research question was: “How does AI influence the way teachers teach, and students learn?” A research questionnaire was filled out by 137 teachers and educators in total working in formal and non-formal education in Europe.
It was followed up by a three-part webinar series on ‘Myths & Realities of AI in Education’; ‘Teaching with AI’ and ‘Ethics in AI & Democratic Education’. All the webinar broadcasts can be found here:
