The European Wergeland Centre’s Annual Report for 2024 is out! Last year we had 21 projects in 16 countries. In our annual report, we showcase some examples of our activities and achievements.
In 2024, the European Wergeland Centre marked its 15th anniversary, reflecting on its accomplishments since its founding in 2008 by Norway and the Council of Europe. Dedicated to promoting democratic citizenship, human rights, and intercultural understanding, EWC continued to make significant impacts this year.
Key Achievements:
- Continued support for Ukrainian schools through the Schools for Democracy programme, adapting to wartime conditions with teacher training and stress management support.
- Concluded the Schools for All programme in Greece, benefiting 125 schools and fostering inclusive education for refugee students.
- Launched new bilateral projects in Romania, Bulgaria, and Slovakia.
- In Norway, developed the Democratic Checklist Against Anti-Sámi Hate Speech, now part of the national action plan against hate and discrimination.
Amid growing threats to democracy in Europe, including populism, misinformation, and climate inaction, EWC focused on strategic planning to remain resilient and relevant. A new five-year strategy was developed collaboratively to guide future efforts in defending democratic values.
This was also the last year of our long-standing Exectuive Director Ana Perona-Fjeldstad, who left the Centre in the autumn of 2024 to pursue new opportunities in Brussels. Serving as EWC’s Executive Director since its founding in 2008, Perona-Fjeldstad was a dedicated leader, overseeing strategy, partnerships, donor relations, and staff management.
A new Executive Director will be presented by the Centre’s Board in 2025.
